Lytton - Monkeywrench / Laluwissin / Onion Lake riding area

The Lytton Monkeywrench / Laluwissin / Onion Lake riding area is one of the most famous riding areas in Canada, if not the world. It is stewarded by the West Coast Dirt Riders (www.westcoastdirtriders.ca) who host the famous Monkeywrench cross-country enduro race every Canada Day / July 1st Long Weekend.

Truly epic trails along mountain ridges, with a great camping areas, including the Murray Creek Rec Site (stewarded by WCDR). Beginner to XX level trails. Kids loop at 14 km camping area.

The 14 km staging & camping area is siituated at am elevation of approx. 5000 ft, in the mountains west of the town of Lytton in the Fraser Canyon, it is surrounded by 7000+ foot mountain ranges, and offers spectacular views for hundreds of miles in all directions.

Trails are open once the snow melts, normally June - Oct annually. WCDR has an annual cleanup weekend held at Spring camp on the May Long Weekend.

Directions:

It is approx 3-4 hours driving from Vancouver and the US border crossings, or 3 hours southwest of Kamloops.

From Vancouver/US border X: head east on Hwy 1 to Hope. At Hope turn off onto Hwy 1 north, head through Hope north to Lytton (approx. 1.5 hours) through the spectacular Fraser Canyon. Upon nearing Lytton, Before the Esso gas station, turn left onto Hwy 12 towards Lillooet. Stock up on supplies in Lytton. Follow Hwy 12 through Lytton, over the bridge, for approx. 19 km towards Lillooet. The Laluwissin FSR is on the right hand side around a sharp right hand corner!

Camping: there are different camping areas, depending on the time of year.

1. Spring camp: on the left side of Laluwissin FSR, approx. 4.5 km from Hwy 12. Used in the Spring as a base camp to access lower trails while there is snow at higher elevations.

2. 14 km camp (preferred campsite for most riders): also known as the start area of the famous Monkeywrench XC race. Approx 14 km from Hwy 12.  At approx. 10 km up the Laluwissin FSR you come to a split in the road: take the left road, it is approx. 3-5 km to the main camping & staging area.

3. Murray Creek Rec Site: approx. 19 km from Hwy 12. See the WCDR website for directions.

DO NOT RIDE ON THE PRIVATE LANDS &/OR FIELD SURROUNDING ONION LAKE. RESPECT THE RANCHERS AND LANDOWNERS TO HELP KEEP THIS RIDING AREA OPEN. SEE WCDR MAPS FOR DETAILS.

Basic trail maps of the trails surrounding the camping areas were available from the WCDR website www.westcoastdirtriders.com  ohvtrailsbc.ca will have them once I can get the data.  Anybody interested in giving me some of their gps tracks for Lytton? (peter.sprague at bcorma.ca)

WCDR greatly appreciates every single volunteer effort to help keep trails clear. Always carry a handsaw, cut out face-slappers well back from the trail, cut out or throw off small trees that blow down.

Lytton maps

I don't know who is managing the westcoastdirtriders.com site. Paul White was the one that created the hand-drawn map of the trails up there.

I have built a web map of dirt bike trails around BC, but it still needs data for Lytton and others. Its at http://bcorma.ca/online_trail_map Will have an app soon that will work off-line, important at Lytton.
